Sea kayak on the mouth of the St. Louis River with instruction and gear provided by RSOP. Beginning at the UMD Boat Shed, located on Minnesota Point, we’ll paddle along the world’s longest freshwater sandbar, and then circumnavigate Herding Island, a sanctuary for herring gulls, ring-billed gulls, terns, cormorants and other marine birds. Experience the activity of a working harbor as we paddle alongside visiting ships from around the world en route to the William A. Irvin, a docked 700-foot ore boat. If conditions are right, feel Lake Superior swells slip beneath your boat as we paddle past the Aerial Lift Bridge. The afternoon will begin with a basic introduction to sea kayaking and incorporate on-water instruction throughout the three-to-six-mile tour. Participants should bring a swimsuit, shoes that can get wet, towel, snack and water bottle; all other equipment is provided.
After paddling, we'll head over to Thirsty Pagan Brewing in Superior to enjoy free pizza, one complimentary beer, and optional brewery tours.
